Mission Statement

Moon Phase Seed Co. is dedicated to making the joys of heirloom gardening accessible to everyone, from homeschool co-op groups, city-dwellers with nothing more than a balcony, aspiring market-gardeners and homesteaders—or simply those who have always wondered but never experienced the natural rite of passage of what it’s like to grow your own produce start to finish (seed to harvest). It’s time to see what you’ve been missing out on!

We believe that anyone who eats food can benefit from the experience of growing their own produce. MPSC is committed to providing high-quality heirloom seeds, organic gardening supplies, and educational resources to help you succeed in your gardening journey.

Core Values

  • Go heirloom (…in most cases): We believe that heirloom seeds are the best choice for gardeners because they are highest in naturally occurring nutrients, bred for superior adaptability to various climates, and have been passed down for generations. That said, there are a few select hybrid varieties we love, like SunGold Cherry Tomatoes!

  • Treat your plants like family: We believe that plants are living beings that deserve to be treated with care and respect. Pay attention to their needs for food and water like you would your own. Watch for changes in color or growth patterns. The less stress your plants experience, the more nutrient-rich they will be when they make it to your table—and that’s the whole point isn’t it?

  • What your put in your body matters most: While there are many joys associated with gardening, for us, the biggest is knowing that you are getting the highest possible nutrient density in your freshly-picked, organically grown produce. Nutrients in food begin degrading immediately after harvest. Lack of proper nutrient intake is one of the leading preventable causes of physical and mental disease in the world, and that is why we are such huge proponents of homegrown heirloom produce!

  • Never stop learning: We have only been gardening more avidly over the last few years, so you are on this learning journey with us, and we will share whatever insights we gain! It’s our responsibility (and privilege to) learn about & practice how we can all make our gardens more environmentally friendly. While there is no need to be perfect, gradually transitioning from conventional to organic to permaculture concepts . Our goal is to spread education, including engaging children in learning to love gardening, as we believe this is the key to the future of our planet and species.

  • Grow organically: We are committed to promoting organic gardening practices that are good for the environment and your health. We also believe that although organic seeds are great, it is much more important & impactful to grow your own plants organically (soil, natural pesticides, & fertilizers) than just have seeds that are labeled organic.

  • Practicing resilience and self-reliance: The ability to adapt flexibly is more important now than ever. Gardening can be a source of great satisfaction, but it can also be frustrating. The challenges it presents help us grow, shift our mindset, change our routines, and accumulate knowledge and wisdom through trial and error. By reconnecting with our natural instincts, we can experience the benefits of gardening just like we do from exercising and eating a healthy diet. It is a deeply ingrained part of our nature that is slowly being forgotten. While you should share with and inspire your neighbors to grow, self-reliance means being able to feed yourself the highest-quality nutrient dense fresh foods you deserve that are not available at the grocery store.

  • Experiential learning: We believe that the best way to learn about gardening (and life in general!) is to do it yourself. Thankfully, we still have access to grocery stores and next season always comes even if your first few harvests don’t turn out the way you expect. For example, there are no formal studies that validate “Moon Phase Planting”, and yet traditional farmers have used this methodology for thousands of years. Are they just stupid…or do they know something we don’t? Try Moon Phase Gardening yourself and draw your own conclusion. This is a great exercise for learning to trust your own experience versus what the “experts” and studies say.

  • Appreciate the historical and cultural value of heirlooms: We appreciate plants that have not only nutritional and culinary value but also historical and cultural value. Just as many of the heirloom varieties available on our site have been carefully preserved for us over generations, we aim to continue to preserve this rich agricultural heritage for future generations. A seed is a promise for tomorrow, what a beautiful gift to hand down!

  • Quality over everything: We believe that quality is always worth the extra effort. This applies to everything we do, including high-quality sealable mylar packets, rugged labels that can easily handle dirt and water, to incredible label artwork created solely by my oldest elementary school friend! Even if it costs more, we support local and small businesses when possible since we know what goes around comes around.

  • Growing plants is a human right: Gardening applies to everyone, regardless of age, sex, race, religion, or any other reason. Plants & food are something that link all human beings on earth. We want to make it accessible to everyone, even people who believe they can’t garden due to space, skills, finances or other factors. We will use a portion of profits from seed sales to provide free seeds, materials, and education to local homeschool groups and financially disadvantaged communities that could benefit the most from having affordable, homegrown organic produce.

  • Use a Multi-Disciplinary Approach: Using multiple schools of thought together can create exponential results! For example, my background is in nutrition and functional medicine. This pairs perfectly with heirloom gardening and was my inspiration in the first place, once I learned how much nutritional value has been lost from our food supply due to soil depletion and toxic chemicals. If you have a background in biology, chemistry, physics, electricity, herbalism, medicine, nutrition, engineering, construction, history, music therapy, etc. try to find ways to apply your knowledge to your garden to upgrade your grow experience—and let us know how it goes!

  • Have fun & let go of perfectionism: We want to help transform people in gardeners for life, so the most important part of all is to have fun with it! Don’t take yourself too seriously or expect a perfect harvest your first season—you’ll likely end up inadvertently killing your plants and wanting to give all of your seeds away otherwise! Gardening is a great hobby to learn what you can and can’t control (helpful for adults and children alike), as well as how to gain wisdom from even the worst catastrophe to do even better next season. Share your wins and epic fails with us, so we can all grow in this hobby together. Gardening creates resilience!

We are on a journey of continuous elevation of people, plants, and the planet, driven by a passion for innovation and a deep commitment to ethical and inclusive practices.

We believe in the power of collaboration to spark creativity and foster growth, and we are dedicated to providing exceptional customer service that reflects our unwavering commitment to honesty and authenticity.

We embrace biodiversity as a reflection of our diverse world and the interconnectedness of all things. Our purpose is to inspire others to take initiative and make a positive impact on the world, one garden at a time.

Overall, Moon Phase Seed Co. is committed to helping people connect with their food and their planet through the practice of heirloom gardening—and we hope you choose to join us on the journey!
